Le Bonheur Children's Hospital

Transitional Care Unit

Our Transitional Care Unit (TCU), the first of its kind in Tennessee, is a 12-bed unit which specializes in the care of technology dependent children. The TCU is designed for children who no longer require concentrated attention in the PICU, but are not ready to be placed in a hospital room or released home. Our patients require long term ventilator support related to a variety of diagnosis. Our goal is excellence in family-centered care.

Our specially trained staff of intensivists, pulmonologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, respiratory therapists, social work and case managers work with your entire family to prepare you to care for your child at home.  As important as any of our clinical team members, are the patient's parents and siblings. Your family members are intimately integrated into the child's care from the first day. This allows your child to go home with their technology needs more quickly, and you will be more prepared to care for your child.

Speech therapists, child life specialists and occupational therapists and nutritionists are also an important part of the team in assisting with promoting developmental growth for these children.
