Emergency Department Transfer Guidelines

In order to facilitate patient transfers from Emergency Departments that have transfer agreements with Le Bonheur Children's, we have developed an auto-accept policy and guidelines. Auto-accept is the process followed when a patient, who meets the following criteria of eligibility, can be transferred to Le Bonheur Children's without speaking directly to an Emergency Physician for acceptance.

Eligibility for auto-accept includes patients with the following diagnoses:

  1. Foreign body in the esophagus
    1. Cannot be a button battery
    2. Radiograph confirms the foreign body is in the esophagus (not in the airway, stomach or intestines).
  2. Acute unruptured appendicitis
    1. Hemodynamically stable
    2. Confirmed by CT or US
  3. Fracture that needs orthopedic intervention
    1. Neurovascularly intact
    2. No signs of compartment syndrome
  4. All menarche female need to have a negative pregnancy test.
